Gitananda Yoga at The Fold Bransford | Gentle Yoga Classes Near Worcester

With less than two weeks before our new class begins at The Fold, I wanted to share a little about what you can expect and answer some of the questions that often come up before a first class.

Starting something new can feel daunting. Many people worry about whether they're flexible enough, fit enough, experienced enough, or even whether they have the right clothes.

The good news is that none of these things matter.

What should I wear?

Simply wear clothes that allow you to move comfortably. There is no special yoga uniform required.

Mats are provided, but please bring:

  • A bottle of water
  • A blanket for relaxation at the end of class

What happens during class?

Each class begins with a brief moment of stillness and awareness of the breath. We take a little time to arrive, settle and leave the outside world at the door.

After a short chant, we move into gentle loosening exercises known as Jattis, helping the body wake up gradually and comfortably.

The class then progresses through a range of postures and movements. Some may feel familiar, others completely new, and neither matters. There is no expectation to know what you're doing. That's why you've come.

We always return to the floor and finish with relaxation, allowing the body and mind time to absorb the benefits of the practice.

Is it a silent class?

Not usually!

While there are moments of quiet and reflection, there is often conversation, laughter and the sharing of stories. The atmosphere is friendly and informal.

That said, there is absolutely no pressure to join in. Some people enjoy chatting, while others prefer to remain quiet and simply enjoy the practice. Both are equally welcome.

A few things to remember

Over the years I've found there are a few principles that help people get the most from yoga.

1. Don't try too hard

This might sound unusual, but it is genuinely one of my mottos for life.

Yoga isn't about forcing, striving or pushing. It's about noticing, exploring and responding to what you find.

2. Never do anything that hurts

Discomfort and challenge can sometimes be part of learning, but pain is not.

Your body is always giving you information. Learning to listen to it is one of the most valuable parts of yoga practice.

3. There is no such thing as perfect

We're often conditioned to believe there's a correct shape or an ideal posture.

There isn't.

We all have different bodies, different experiences and different needs.

Practice doesn't make perfect. Practice makes progress.

4. Progress isn't always a straight line

Some days you'll feel strong and energised.

Other days everything feels harder than it did the week before.

That's completely normal.

Growth, healing and learning rarely happen in a neat upward line. More often they move in circles, spirals and unexpected pathways. The important thing is simply to keep showing up.

Above all...

This is your class.

You're invited to participate in whatever way feels right for you on that particular day.

Whether you come to move, breathe, relax, connect with others, or simply enjoy an hour of quiet rest, you'll be welcome.

I'm really looking forward to meeting you all and beginning this journey together.

And if you have any questions before, during or after class, please don't hesitate to ask.
