Stress is Rising - Is Your Workplace Ready?

Published on 4 July 2026 at 19:33

Stress is now one of the biggest challenges facing UK workplaces. It affects energy, focus, confidence, communication and performance — and when it is left unchecked, it can quickly lead to absence, burnout and disengagement.

The latest Health and Safety Executive figures show that 964,000 workers in Great Britain were suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2024/25. Work-related ill health and injury led to 40.1 million working days lost, with an estimated cost of £22.9 billion in 2023/24.

CIPD and Simplyhealth also report that UK employees were off sick for an average of 9.4 days over the previous year, with mental ill health among the main causes of long-term absence and stress a leading cause of both short- and long-term absence.

Pressure Is Inevitable. Burnout Isn’t.

A certain amount of pressure can motivate people and sharpen performance. But when pressure becomes constant, recovery disappears and people feel they have no space to think, stress starts to take over.

It can show up as poor sleep, irritability, low confidence, difficulty concentrating, more mistakes, emotional reactions or simply feeling overwhelmed. Spotting these signs early — and responding well — can make a real difference.

How Wellbeing Coaching Helps

Wellbeing coaching gives people time and space to understand what is driving their stress and what needs to change. It helps individuals build practical strategies, healthier boundaries, stronger confidence and more sustainable ways of working.

For employers, coaching can complement wider wellbeing support by helping people take action before stress becomes absence, burnout or performance decline.

A Simple Resilience Framework

My wellbeing coaching approach focuses on five connected pillars of resilience:

  • Energy — protecting rest, recovery and sustainable habits.
  • Future focus — creating clarity, direction and purpose.
  • Inner drive — rebuilding confidence and motivation.
  • Flexible thinking — improving perspective and problem-solving.
  • Strong relationships — strengthening communication and support.
